1. Introduction

About this Report
In 1999 Alcan’s Kitimat smelter became the first industrial facility in British Columbia to obtain a multi-media environmental permit from the provincial government. As its name suggests, this permit comprehensively addresses multiple emissions, effluents and solid wastes. It replaces what were previously six separate permits, which covered specific aspects of environmental performance at the Kitimat smelter.

The multi-media permit establishes clear standards, while providing for a more outcome-focused approach and greater latitude in terms of how those standards are achieved. This approach is intended to foster better environmental outcomes, while being easier to monitor from a compliance perspective and more transparent from a public standpoint.

In the spirit of public transparency, the multi-media permit requires the preparation of an annual report. This document provides a detailed accounting of Alcan B.C.’s performance against key aspects of the standards set out in the permit, and with respect to other aspects of environmental management. This report is provided to the provincial government and made publicly available.

In compliance with further permit requirements, Alcan B.C. also provides updated reporting on some key environmental performance indicators throughout the year at www.alcaninbc.com/kitimat (look under the “Environment” heading in the menu sidebar).
