Community Partners
The following are a representative sample of some of the partner organizations and initiatives that have recently been supported through Alcan B.C.’s Community Investment Program.

The society promotes music and the arts, particularly among youth, and presents an annual "Music and Friends" festival in Kitimaat Village on the July long weekend. The event helps raise funds for construction of an elders care facility in the Haisla community. |

Alcan is proud to contribute to efforts to increase tourism in the Pacific Northwest. A tour program at Alcan's smelter is administerd by the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce, and hundreds of tourists take part each summer. By partnering with chambers throughout the northwest, Alcan is helping build a strong business community. |
| Aluminum City Telethon | This annual event is a key opportunity for members of the Kitimat community to support a range of non-profit organizations, to whom the significant funds raised are distributed. |

Alcan partners with the Na Na Kila Institute and the NWCC to provide the Kitlope Field School – a university credit program. Our partnership allows the students to spend time in the Kitlope, studying the natural and cultural heritage of the world’s largest intact coastal temperate rainforest. |

This annual tournament has become one of the largest in northwest BC, where the passion for basketball runs high among youth and adults alike. |

The games are an annual celebration of winter and sport, and a premiere competition for the thousands of youth athletes taking part in 21 different events. |

| District of Vanderhoof | 100 pairs of “rental” skates have been made available free-of-charge to the public, at the Vanderhoof Arena, providing fun on the ice without the expense of purchasing or renting equipment. |
| Fort Fraser Elementary School | The Fort Fraser Elementary School recently installed an “adventurer playground”. This is the only one in the small community, and is therefore an important resource for the school and Fort Fraser as a whole. |
| Francois-Ootsa Sportsmen’s Association | The sportsmen’s association is installing “wildlife reflectors” along the Ootsa-Nadina Road in the Southside area, designed to reduce the number of vehicle–wildlife collisions. |
| Nadleh Whut’en First Nation | The Nadleh Whut’en’s family dinner and dance on New Year’s Eve is a celebratory event promoting a healthy lifestyle involving abstinence from alcohol and drugs. |
| Nechako Valley Concert Committee | This non-profit society, run by a small group of volunteers, arranges for local performances in Vanderhoof by professional musicians from across Canada. |
| Regional Secondary Schools | Each year, more than $11,000 in scholarships are awarded to secondary school and college students throughout the region – both as a reward for their achievements, and as an investment in their further education. |

Local artists used Spirit or Kermode bear sculptures as their canvasses for unique works that were prominently displayed around B.C. and then auctioned. Alcan was a project sponsor and purchased a family of bears, one of which is now on display at the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce. Project proceeds benefited the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities and the Canucks for Kids Fund. |

This is one of the premiere sporting and cultural events on the summer festival calendar in Vancouver, attracting teams from around B.C. and beyond. It is a celebration of the province’s Asia-Pacific links. Alcan B.C. has been title sponsor for more than a decade. |

The Alcan Imagination Station is a popular feature at this annual summer festival, which is attended by more than 50,000. Operated in cooperation with the Public Dreams Society, the station gives children the opportunity to make puppets and hats from aluminum and other recyclable products. |
| 30 Days of Sustainability |
This annual month-long event in the Vancouver area features a wide range of awareness programs – including exhibitions, seminars, speaking forums, and a summit and gala event. The objective is to promote broad integration of sustainability into everyday values. |

The foundation’s Community Salmon Program helps conserve and rebuild salmon populations in northern B.C., by providing funding for technically sound and volunteer-driven projects. |
| Alcan Performing Arts Award www.vecc.bc.ca |
Administered through the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, this $60,000 award fosters the creation of new work by B.C. performing arts companies. It is rotated annually among the categories of dance, theatre, and opera/music. |
