Introduction: Performance 2001 Alcan Primary Metal, British Columbia (Alcan B.C.) is committed to the continual improvement of its performance in the environmental, economic and social spheres the three areas generally considered to be the pillars of sustainable operations. Alcan B.C. is also committed to reporting on its performance against a wide range of indicators and targets in each of these areas. Alcan B.C. continued to see progress during 2001 with respect to indicators of all three types. A particularly significant environmental milestone was reached with the successful registration of Alcan B.C.'s environmental management system under the requirements of ISO 14001. (News release) Performance in 1999 and 2000 was overviewed in detailed printed reports, which were widely distributed to Alcan B.C. stakeholders, and full-text versions of which are available elsewhere on this web site. Those reports include background information with respect to Alcan B.C.s operations, production processes, and major corporate initiatives. They also provide broader context for the specific indicators reported. In the future, detailed reports of that type will be prepared when changed circumstances are significant enough to justify them. In the meantime, Alcan B.C. will continue to report online on its annual progress against specific indicators and targets. Readers who would like more detailed information on any aspect of Alcan B.C.s performance may find it useful to refer to the relevant section in the most recent of the detailed printed reports. For ease of reference, links are provided within each of the following sections of our 2001 report. Information with respect to company-wide performance in 2001 is also available through a sustainability report prepared by Alcan B.C.'s parent company, Alcan Inc. Alcan's Journey Towards Sustainability describes the company's approach to sustainability issues throughout its worldwide operations, and is available at www.alcan.com.
