Introduction: Performance 2002

Over the course of 2002, Alcan Primary Metal, British Columbia (Alcan B.C.) continued to work towards ongoing improvement with respect to its environmental, economic and social performance. Challenges were encountered, but significant progress was made under all of these broad headings.

Environmental responsibility remains one of the most important focal points, and Alcan B.C. continued to invest and innovate in an effort to ensure – and move beyond – full regulatory compliance. And although production remained below full capacity, Alcan B.C. succeeded in meeting key financial targets and had particular success with value-added production.

There was an especially strong focus on the work environment at Alcan B.C. in 2002. This included introducing a new company-wide Environment, Health and Safety Policy, and carrying out a global employee survey. The survey results specific to Alcan B.C. were analyzed (more than 1,000 B.C. employees took part) and action plans developed in response.

This online version of the Alcan B.C. performance report is the second of its kind to be produced. Like the 2001 version, it reports on various indicators that are believed to be of key interest to Alcan B.C.’s stakeholders.

These indicators were first defined in detailed written reports for 1999 and 2000 that provided additional background on Alcan B.C.’s operations and context with respect to each indicator. Readers interested in knowing more about Alcan B.C.’s performance may want to refer to the most recent of those detailed reports. For ease of reference, links to the online version of the 2000 report are provided within each of the following sections of the 2002 report.
