Introduction A Proud Past and Sustainable Future 2004 will surely prove to be one of the most memorable years in the history of Alcan B.C., in large part due to the celebration of this operation’s 50th anniversary. It was a tremendous opportunity to showcase the past, while also focusing on a positive vision for the future. In that spirit, let me reflect on this milestone year. In operational terms and although we are pleased with overall performance it was a year characterized by various challenges. This included an unusual water year in the Nechako Reservoir, high production costs, and an unresolved controversy involving the District of Kitimat. The smelter also experienced disappointing safety results, which we are committed to turning around in 2005. The challenges, however, were counter-balanced not just by the anniversary celebration, but by noteworthy operational, economic and relationship-based achievements during 2004. This included record sheet ingot production, and a noteworthy strengthening of our efforts to support regional economic diversification. Looking back over 2004 from the broadest perspective, what I find perhaps most satisfying is the progress we’ve made embedding an integrated commitment to sustainability into our day-to-day operations. I am also struck by the nature of the main case studies we are able to present in this report, each of which has multiple and diverse benefits. They speak, I believe, to an approach to operational issues that is informed by sustainability in the fullest sense of the word and by a commitment to maximizing value across all key parameters. As we move through 2005 and beyond, we will continue to refine and expand such approaches. We are confident that they will be a basis to more effectively address safety and other issues, and to build on the many successes of 2004 and of our now more than half-century of history here in B.C.
